The syndrome of the « what-ifs », or « when I will have enough..... »

Posted on 03/02/2017

My experience over the last 30 years working in the financial industry is that financial happiness and fulfillment with money is not related to the amount of money on your bank account. Whether they are a saver, stuck in a rut or in debt, many people suffer from money-related stress and anxiety and it’s clearly how they think about their situation that keeps them stuck in « suffering mode ».

A good example of this is the “what-ifs.” We all want more clients, more money ! What if I can’t pay back my mortgage on time, what if I don’t get paid on time, what if I can’t afford retiring and need to work until I’m 80! Or when I will have the money I will buy a new car, when I will have the money I will travel more, I will do a training or I will do this and that!

These are false excuses, most of the time Money is just a symptom of bigger fears. It’s impossible to feel happy or content when you allow negative thoughts and beliefs to circle your mind endlessly. This is fear at its most damaging, and it keeps you small, putting a lid on your creative endeavors, emotions, and more importantly, your spiritual growth. Your spiritual growth involves inspired thinking and enthusiasm for living. In contrast, fear stimulates the part of the brain called the amygdala and triggers the fight-or-flight response. And It is a vicious circle until you decide to stop this process.

Suzanne, one of my clients, when we first met, was in her fifties and still struggling with money. She was stuck, couldn’t afford what she really desired, felt insecure, couldn’t pay all her bills at the end of the month. She always wanted more: money, clients...!

But why she didn’t already have it? This question went right on her. She was expressing all the excuses, her husband who was a gambler, her children who cost a lot of money, the market was too difficult etc, etc! When she realized that it was not true, she acknowledged that she would never be rich for the same reason if she kept the same habits and behaviors......

After a deep exploration and detective work to uncover the meaning of money and its purpose in her own history, Suzanne started to master the game of money and life. She gained clarity, focus and ease as a talented photographer. With self awareness, love and enthusiasm she now combines work and leisure, art and travel. She shares her abundant life with her husband and creates opportunities for children by involving them in fine arts and performances. She is a fulfilled Business Mum.

Like Suzanne take the decision to unlock anxiety, frustration, fears, lack of security, feeling powerless, resentful...
