Why I started my business

Posted on 24/04/2012

I have always had a natural passion for health and wellbeing and helping people. Whilst at university I was eager to hear about what my fellow room mates were learning about the muscles and the mind, (Occupational therapy and Psychology). At the age of 19 I thought it was too late to change. Its strange how the mind works. I remember feeling under so much pressure to achieve and finish what Id started. On reflection I realise its never too late to start anything or to change your path.

When I finished my degree I was unsure what to do. During my studies, I had used lots of essential oils. I had a well-worn A-Z of Aromatherapy. I used Lavender to help me sleep, Lemon and Rosemary to help me concentrate and Peppermint to energise and clear my mind after a party. I thought of this as an interest, not a business. Then I did an Executive Secretarial Diploma going straight into a full time office position for the Director of a small family run telecommunications business.

I hit the ground running and thinking back this was my building block. Here, I put all my knowledge into practice and was trained by the Director a perfectionist with a background in management accountancy who was passionate and driven.

I soon became tired of my work though. It didnt fulfil me and Id started to suffer from stress and developed repetitive strain injury. My partner has always said follow your heart. I started to think about what I enjoyed and what I really wanted to do with my life. I enrolled in an evening course, Clinical & Holistic Aromatherapy and Massage and have not looked back.

I became self-employed and made the transition into new part-time employment in HR. This would be my safety net while I built my own business. I have since built up a wonderful portfolio of clients.

As an Aromatherapist I was able to work with essential oils and base oils but this was the limit. Some clients often asked me to make them something for a specific skin or muscular problem. I knew that in some cases a cream or a balm would work better.

This curiosity led me on my next journey where I learnt all about natural ingredients, how to make lip balms, moisturisers and a range of skincare products. I passed testers and samples out to friends, clients and family and received lots of positive feedback.

Im a problem solver and a perfectionist. A few years down the line and lots of formulating resulted in the creation of Just Be Natural. A range of natural products that I believe provide people with a healthier alternative to conventional skincare.

My ultimate goal is to make this a full time business. During the process I have learned a lot of important lessons from others.
