Female Breadwinners - Come out of the Closet

Posted on 24/04/2012

I am fascinated by the lives of female breadwinners and through my research I have found that they are in hiding! When I meet women they often know a friend or a colleague who is a female breadwinner but it is never them. According toa government commissioned report into economic inequality, published by the National Equality Panel in 2010, one in five women in the UK are the breadwinner and the number of female breadwinners is also rising in the US. So where are they hiding?

Perhaps you are wondering what I mean by female breadwinner, in case its you?

Well its when a couple is co-habiting or married, with children and the woman is the main or sole income earner.

If you are a female breadwinner reading this, you will know that due to societys assumptions and norms, as a female breadwinner you are neglected or ignored and as such receive little support.

The truth is that, if you are happy being a female breadwinner there arent other women to celebrate, share with and support in their role as breadwinner; and if you are finding it difficult being the breadwinner, who do you turn to for help?

I encourage you to come out of the closet. Why?

Because, being Female Breadwinner can fundamentally challenge womens identity and the assumptions made by those around them. For a successful career and family life women must examine and address these challenges.

Because, being the Female Breadwinner is the trigger, catalyst and cause for many complex issues that women have to manage. These must be addressed for their physical, mental and spiritual well-being
Imagine if you could change things.

If female breadwinners could receive the support they deserve, around the challenges they face in doing it all, such as: others assumptions of them, guilt, managing money, their well being and career.

What if female breadwinners could be acknowledged for their contribution, and leave a positive legacy for future generations? Its my personal mission to make sure that this happens.
